Yes, once on battery it beeps constantly (until the battery runs out, power comes back on, or you switch it off) and there is no way to configure it to behave otherwise. are you sure it was a extension/straight-through and not a null modem? Maybe the device doesn't even use those crossed lines, it's pretty basic as far as the communication with PC is involved.
